Statement on Opening of Churches - for all the Chelmsford Circuit

Since the Government announcement that Churches could (not will) reopen for Worship after 4th July 2020 Methodist Churches of the Chelmsford Circuit have been working on the interpretation of the guidance which was released on June 29th.

In our various Churches this week this guidance has been very carefully considered by ministers, Church stewards and property teams.

The implications of the guidance mean that many of the 'norms' of our acts of worship will be restricted. For example services should last no longer than 35-40 minutes; we will not be permitted to sing or raise our voices; we cannot use hymn books or Bibles unless they are brought in and taken away by individuals; toilets need sanitising after each use, along with other special cleaning; entering and leaving the premises will need to be a measured experience and distancing inside is a strict requirement with a maximum number allowed in. The guidelines also remind us that we have a duty of care for the most vulnerable group, those over aged 70.

Consequently many of our Churches have come to the conclusion that these restrictions mean that Churches will remain closed for both worship and lettings at least until the end of July when the question will be reviewed again. Some however are going to recommence worship - see the list below for details. I know these continued closures will be a source of great disappointment to many, but we are aware that there are also a significant number who would feel unable to come back at this time even if we did open. Online services will continue.

Many thanks to all those who have worked hard to consider these matters this week, and to you all for your understanding in this difficult time for our Church, and of course, the wider community. If you should have any questions or comments please contact your minister or a Church steward. We will keep you updated in due course.

With every blessing,
Rev'd Mark Pengelly
Superintendent Minister

We are a friendly, all-age church that helps people explore and live the Christian faith. Regrettably we have been informed that we need to close completely for the time being, which means that there will not be any Sunday Services or activities. However, we are a church of people rather than just our building so we continue individually to pray for our neighbours, friends, our government and the world at large as it faces such extreme times.  If you would like us to pray for you we have a black prayer box on the side wall of the church where you can leave prayer requests.
We will update this page regularly so please check for changes.

AND don't forget our You Tube service every Sunday at 10am.
